Brazilian officials assess Olympic issues

Thursday, August 25 2016 by SNTV
  • Brazil's Olympic officials delivered their verdict on the 2016 Rio Games on Tuesday (23rd August),

SOUNDBITE: (English) Eduardo Paes, Rio de Janeiro mayor:

"As you know, the Guanabara Bay cleaning was a state-level responsibility, but I want to make a point here - they had a goal, actually that goal was not even in the book, but okay, they (Brazilian Olympic committee officials) had a goal of 80 per cent of sewage treatment. They went from 15 to 55, 60 per cent. So they did not reach the whole treatment that was needed, but they moved. I wish it was fully accomplished, it was not. But I'm sure and certain that people are going to be pressuring, the state-level (authorities) will take care of that."

SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) Eliseu Padilha, interim Brazilian President's Chief of Staff:

(on release of extra funding for Paralympic Games)

"The financial issue regarding the Paralympic Games was resolved with the IOC's (International Olympic Committee) representative here in Brazil during our last meeting and it's completely resolved. We have to wait for the release of the money from some state companies. This is still in progress but what we needed - the initial release of funds for the delegations to move forward - has already happened."
