Federer out for the season with knee injury

Wednesday, July 27 2016 by SNTV
  • File of Swiss tennis great Roger Federer after injury rules him out of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics and the rest of the 2016 season.

Roger Federer says he will miss the Rio Olympics and the rest of the tennis season to protect his surgically repaired left knee.

Federer said he needs "more extensive rehabilitation" after knee surgery in February - that was the 17 time Grand Slam champion's one and only career operation.

Federer will now miss the Olympic Games, next month's US Open and the season finale in November at the World Tour Finals.

He hasn't played since losing to Milos Raonic in the Wimbledon semi-finals early this month.

Federer fell awkwardly during that match and said at the time he wasn't sure how badly he might have been injured.
