  • On Saturday (21st May) over 10,000 runners took part in the Fisherman's Friend StrongmanRun in Germany. It was an event that challenged paricipants, many in fancy dress, to conquer up to 34 obstacles around the famous Formula One circuit, Nurburgring.

What do you get when you have some heavy metal air guitarists, two men dressed as an angel and devil and a group of crash test dummies? The Fisherman's Friend StrongmanRun in Germany of course.

On Saturday, over 10,000 runners took part in the event which was held at the famous Formula One circuit, the Nurburgring. The vast majority of participants were running in groups of friends and many opted to take part in fancy dress... as you can see.

Whilst the distances - a choice of 12 kilometres or 24 kilometres - were familiar, the method of getting from the start line to the finish was highly unorthodox.

Runners were challenged to jump over, climb under and swim through up to 34 different obstacles in order to complete the course.

One of the more challenging obstacles were the 20,000 car tyres runners had to navigate and the steep slide into ice cold water.

Contestants were mainly taking part for the fun and to raise money but there were prizes to be won as well. The fastest contestants were awarded medals, whilst some people opted for a less than athlete-like way of rehydrating..

Team members Robin Dechant and Hagen Brosius were the first to finish the 24 kilometre race, with a time of 1 hour 43 minutes and 8 seconds.

The extreme running event at the Nurburgring first took place in 2007 and will celebrate its 10th anniversary next year. And after all, any racing event which finishes with the wheelbarrow is worth it's place on a sporting calendar.
