Independiente del Valle sealed their spot in the Copa Libertadores semifinals with a penalty shoot-out win, despite losing 2-1 to Pumas UNAM, on Tuesday (24 May) in Mexico City.
Following a thrilling 2-1 victory in Ecuador, Independiente del Valle travelled to Mexico for the return leg of their Copa Libertadores quarter-final against Pumas UNAM.
Looking to hold on to their slim advantage, the started terribly for the visitors as Pumas opened the scoring in the 16th minute.
Librado Azcona sending Ismael Sosa through on goal, and he finished in style to give the home fans the start they would have hoped for.
And things got even better for the Mexican side just two minutes later.
Sosa running riot down the right wing, on this occasion he took one touch before unleashing a superb strike to make it 2-0 and give 3-2 advantage on aggregate in the tie.
Things went from bad to worse for Independiente in the second half as they went down to 10 men in the 56th minute.
Luis Ayala shown a straight red for his challenge on Sosa, seemingly putting and end to the Ecuadorian side's chances.
However, ten minutes later, Junior Sornoza managed to pull a goal back with a free kick, the ball somehow finding its way through a crowded penalty area.
It proved to be enough, as they game ended 2-1 and 3-3 on aggregate meaning penalties would decide the outcome.
Arturo Mina scored the spot kick that clinched the 5-3 win for Independiente del Valle who go through to the semi-finals of the competition.
