The penultimate Sunday (1st April) in the Eredivisie all but decided the top 3 places: Ajax top maintaining their 6-goal advantage, PSV Eindhoven in second win 6-2 to send Cambuur down, and Feyenoord (3rd) beat Willem II 1-0.
The penultimate weekend of the Dutch Championship was a complete goal-fest for titleholders PSV Eindhoven and league leaders Ajax.
PSV are tied on points with Ajax so need to make inroads into the Amsterdam club's 6 goal advantage. Phillip Cocu's side duly relegated opponents Cambuur 6-2, but the help they were hoping for from Ajax's opposition FC Twente didn't come - the midtable side went down 4-0 to leave Ajax's goal difference intact.
At Eindhoven Cambuur showed real fight after PSV's first goal, through Marco van Ginkel off a Luuk de Jong cross. At 18 minutes Calvin MacIntosch deflected Xander Houtkoop's shot past Jeroen Zoet to pull the visitors level. More goals from PSV Eindhoven men - first Luuk de Jong, then Gaston Pereira - gave them a two goal cushion. But then Jack Byrne pulled one back from the edge of the penalty area. And all this before half time!
An unusual display from Cambuur goalkeeper Leonard Nienhuis - who played the ball into the path of Adam Maher gifted the midfielder PSV's fourth - and two goals from free kicks sent Cambuur down.
Ajax's four goals looked like this:
Vaclav Cerny was first in at 37 minutes to put Ajax 1-0 up before half time. The last three came in the final 11 minutes.
With the top two places likely decided (barring an absolute barrage of PSV goals and some help from Ajax's final opponents - relegated FC Graafschap), Feynoord made 3rd secure.
At Willem II Anass Achahbar's long range shot was fumbled in by Konstantinos Lamprou to give Feynoord a 1-0 win, and an unassailable points tally of 60.
