Spain taking Ukraine seriously

Tuesday, October 13 2015 by SNTV
  • With the hosts still hopeful of gaining a place at France 2016 automatically from Group C, Ukraine and Spain were on Sunday (11 October) preparing for their European Championship qualifier in Kiev.

    Script:

Spain take on Ukraine and return to the Kiev's Olympic Stadium, where they had won the Euro 2012 final against Italy.
While Spain are already assured of their place for France 2016, and Ukraine must hope they beat Slovakia's result on the night to guarantee qualification from Group C.

SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Mykhailo Fomenko, Ukraine coach:

"Spain is that kind of team which could play three times with three different sets of players, and it will get the same result. Tomorrow we'll try to break their plans."

"Everything depends on our guys, that they've got enough information about Spain. And they understand very clearly that whoever plays tomorrow will be facing a very difficult game. We pray to have a positive result."

Spain look to have the upper hand. Ukraine have never beaten the two-time European champions. But Vincente del Bosque is far from complacent.

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Vicente del Bosque, Spain coach:

"We have an idea of who's in our main team. We've had to make some replacements because of injures to key players. But in another aspect, this is an opportunity for other less-known players to show their class and best play tomorrow."

"The Ukrainian team is very strong, its players are very powerful individually, especially on the flanks and going forward. In general, I can say that the team is a very serious rival and not it's not going to be easy."

If Spain consolidate their position with another 3 points, Ukraine could still qualify via a play-off, but they're are sure to push to their limit to avoid resorting to any contingency plans.
