Script: Germany beat England 3-2 via a penalty shoot-out at the Euro Hockey Championships in London on Thursday. An end-to-end first half finished 1-1, with England opening the scoring in the 20th minute.

Markus Weise's side drew level in the last minute before the break.

Lively Lukas Windfeder made it 2-1 Germany at barely three minutes to go. It was a powerful corner flick.

At the second of two England corners though: controversy. A Gleghorne ball flew up off Jacobi's pads and Barry Middleton's attempt to volley in the rebound was blocked by Tobias Hauke, giving England a penalty stroke.

Ashley Jackson's confident shot took the game to a shoot-out - level on 2-apiece at the end of normal time.

Heartbreak for England though when Nicolas Jacobi saved Sam Ward's penalty after Germany's Mats Grambusch converted.

Jacobi's outstanding keeping sends Germany into the final against the Netherlands on Saturday. The Germans will be bidding to win their ninth European title.

    England play Ireland for bronze.
