Caroline Wozniacki beat Maria Sharapova in three sets, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 6-2, on Tuesday (21 October) in the opening White Group match at the WTA Finals in Singapore.

Maria Sharapova went into her opening match with Caroline Wozniacki at the WTA Finals in Singapore hoping to end the season with the number one rank.

She needs to at least reach the final in Singapore to have a chance of overtaking Serena Williams and finishing the season with the top ranking for the first time.

The match included 12 breaks of serve and it was Wozniacki who took the first set 7-6 after a tie break to hold the early advantage.

Wozniacki served for the match at 5-4 up in the second set but Sharapova held on, and eventually won a tie break to take the second and level the match.

But Wozniacki was only temporarily stopped from taking the win, she eventually claimed victory in three hours and 14 minutes with a 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 win
