After a difficult week for Pope Francis following the death of some family members - he welcomed his football team into the Vatican on Wednesday.

San Lorenzo, following their Copa Libertadores title met their most famous fan, who himself appeared overwhelmed by the occasion...

"I greet the champions of Latin America, the San Lorenzo team that join us today. The club is part of my cultural identity."

During his weekly audience, the pontiff expressed thanks for the prayers and condolences sent him after the death of a nephew's wife and her two young children in a car crash in his native Argentina.

Yet the Pope, is a passionate fan of the club - and his mood appeared to brighten in their company.

The Argentinian side defeated Paraguayan side Nacional 1-0 in the final of South America's Champions League & they brought with them the unmissable trophy.

San Lorenzo can now look forward to yet more high profile meetings when they will likely face Real Madrid in the Club World Cup in December.

For now, their players and fans seemed content with putting a smile on the face of one of the world's most influential people.
