SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Hooper, Commonwealth Games Chief Executive (on the Mayalsian cyclist Azizulhasni Awang's "save Gaza" protest):
"I'll give you an update. It's quite simple. The actions were investigated and we spoke with the Malaysian team management. It's a matter for the Malaysian team management to address. It's inappropriate for any form of protest, etc in a Games venue. We respect everyone's right to protest out with as was discussed a few days ago in this very room. However, it is inappropriate. He has had a strong reprimand from his team management, he's apologised profusely. He now knows any repetition will see a removal of his accreditation."
SOUNDBITE (English) Mike Hooper, Commonwealth Games Chief Executive (on the Mayalsian cyclist Azizulhasni Awang's "save Gaza" protest):
"The constitution itself, there's a lot of entry requirements to participation in the Games. One of them is the athlete entry and eligibility conditions form. One of those is you shall not bring the Games into disrepute. You heard his Royal Highness Tunku Imram say, 'we're about sport, we're about bringing the Commonwealth together.' HE said that a few days ago. On response about people's legitimate right to protest whatever the issue may be - absolutely, we respect that. We're all from democracies. But not within the Games venues. Certainly it would fall under that clause that athlete signed and all athletes and all of us signed to participate in the Games."
