David Trezeguet has backed Zinedine Zidane to get the maximum out of his players at Real Madrid, having prepared well for his opportunity at a top job.
The Real legend took his first proper managerial role in January, when the club opted to sack Rafael Benitez—who had only taken over from Carlo Ancelotti during the summer—and replace him with the club legend [as per Reuters].
Zidane had previously been the club’s B team coach, but replaced Benitez—who had a contract until June 2018—following the latter’s perceived underperformance.
As well as winning the World Cup and the European Championships with France, Zidane was a hero at Real, where he won the Spanish title in 2003 and the Champions League a year before.
As one of the club’s all-time greats, Zidane has enjoyed the backing of the fans and is enjoying a strong start to life as a manager.
To date, he has played five and won four, but faces a stern test this weekend when Real host Athletic Bilbao.
Speaking to Perform [as per Goal], Trezeguet—who enjoyed great success with Zizou as part of the great France side at the turn of the century—has backed his former teammate to succeed in one critical area where he believes Benitez failed.
