An Australian footballer has received arguably the most bonkers red card ever - after being sent off for a late challenge on a man dressed as an 8 foot BBQ sauce bottle.

The condiment based mascot was taking part in a testimonial match for retiring Central Coast Mariners legend John Hutchinson, and burst clear of the defence with the scores at 11-4.

While it looked like no-one would ketchup to the marauding bottle as he bore down on goal, defender Brent Griffiths went in hard with a late tackle.

He absolutely bottled it from here

Griffiths quite rightly received his marching orders for the challenge on the bottle, quite probably becoming the first man in history to do so.

You just can't allow tackles like this

The game ended up 12-5, but will surely be remembered for producing the best sauce-based moment in football since these Bradford fans started singing about some on a pie.

'Never touched him ref'

After the game, it was suggested that the tackle was quite possibly an act of revenge for this incident before the match...
